Agonising defeat for the 1st's, battling draw for 2nd's and two great wins for the 3rd's

It was a mixed weekend of weather and results for the Hill on Saturday 6th/Sunday 7th June.

NEPL Premier Division - 1st XI v Burnopfield (h) - Lost by 2 wickets

It was a damp miserable afternoon but just about playable, so all eyes were on the captains at the toss.

We lost skipper Bell early, soon to be followed by Adam, and when the pro departed for 28 (all 3 wickets to Matty Oswell) we were 38 for 3, however Toby Barton and Sam Dinning led the recovery before Sam (22) was adjudged LBW to leave us 103 for 4, however after that wickets fell regularly, Barton going quickly after, new man Morgan Barnes fell for 12, Max for 10, and we eventually stumbled to 148 all out with Ben Cant the not out batsman on 16.

In reply we snared Burnopfield dangerman John Oswell early for 1, and wickets fell regularly thereafter 27 for 2, 63 for 3, 85 for 4, 95 for 5, however skipped Ross Whitfield (43 not out) remained at the wicket and his presence proved crucial as he held the innings together eventually finding a match winning 9th wicket partnership with Josh Boushfield (31 not out) to surpass our 148 in the 34th over.

It was a tremendous effort by our 3 seamers who bowled all but 2 of the 34 overs, Sam Martin-Jenkins the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 58 off 11.

Next up is a trip north to old foes Ashington in what is a crucial game as we aim to get back to winning ways.

<a href="https://benwellhill.

NEPL Division 2 - 2nd XI v Newcastle City (a) - Losing Draw - Match Report by Ayush Chakraporty

On a gloomy day in Gosforth, skipper Peter Jones won the toss and elected to bowl first.

Gabriel Mellor and Nazifullah Habibi started exceptionally well, keeping things tight and proving difficult to get away for the first 20 overs.

Following a brief rain delay, however, the momentum shifted.

Our reply started brilliantly.

The partnership was broken when Patel fell for 22, flicking one straight to square leg.

Thankfully, the lower order delivered a masterclass in defensive resilience.

The rearguard action was anchored by a monumental, two-hour stint from Peter Jones.

Overall, it was a highly respectable effort from the boys to manufacture a draw from a difficult position.

<a href="https://benwellhill.

NTCL Division 5 South - 3rd XI v Newton (a) - Won by 4 runs - Injured Vice Captains Match Report by James Walder

The 3rd XI travelled to Humshaugh to play Newton and it was the return match for Nick and Jeff Mason and a welcome first sighting of Kaush.

Skipper Chris 'Cherry' Pounder continued his impressive run of losing every toss this season and with rain forecast we were asked to bat.

Despite not picking up early wickets, the bowlers limited scoring opportunities until Jamie got 2 wickets.

A good win in a tight game with good fielding and bowling getting us across the line.

<a href="https://benwellhill.

NEPL Sunday Division 1 v Chester-le-Street (h) - Won by 28 runs - Injured Captain's Report by Matty Hynd

The NEPL 3s took on champions Chester-le-Street at home on a windy day at the Hill.

Harsh and Ayusb got us off to a good start before Harsh was bowled for a well made 28.

CLS started confidentiality as they added 50 for the first wicket , before Hector removed opener Armstrong for 17.

Another great performance from the young team well supported by the returning Mason brothers.

<a href="https://benwellhill.

Chairmans News : June 2026

With the advent of summer on June 1 of course weather changed for the worse but happily to date there have been relatively few fixtures lost and the Ground has been as busy as ever.

This theme is reflected in 2nd and third team results which can be found on the BHCC website.

This is, of course, led by Barry Pearson who was rightfully recognised by the Northumberland Cricket Board recently in highlighting the work of Volunteers in Cricket.

Overseas Professional David Christie has made a big impression around the Club, and our young players can learn a great deal from how he approaches his role.

Elsewhere the Patio project is now complete and is testament to the seemingly unlimited skills of Mark Charlton.

Members will be pleased to learn that work to rebuild the West Road wall is getting underway today.

The Squash Court will also be refurbished in early August which will require closure for a few days.

A new bench will shortly be appearing in front of the Club House which has been purchased by the Shaw Family in honour of the much-missed Professor – our former Secretary and much-loved player.

Finally, website readers will be aware of the recent sad death of Les Jowsey who played in the 70`s and was Club Captain in 1979.

Sorry Joe Moore – this is a little lengthy but there seemed a lot of news to impart.

Finally take a look at the photo below taken from Club Photographer Martin Avery's drone, it superbly captures the recent improvements made to the front of the club.

RIP Les Jowsey 1940-2026 - funeral arrangements now available

It is with deep sadness that we share with you the peaceful passing at his home in Poynton (Cheshire) of ex Benwell Hill 1st XI Captain, Les Jowsey.

He took 120 league wickets at 21.

David also pointed out the very interesting fact that it was Les who persuaded Mike Younger to switch from seam to spin bowling during Mike's first season at the Hill.

Les also played for Percy Main and Swalwell in his time in the North East, and when he moved to the Midlands he played for Solihill Blossomfield, Leamington and the Midlands Club Cricket XI on many occassions.

Les's funeral will be on Wednesday 17th June at 3:15pm at Rowan Chapel Crematorium in Stockport, and afterwards at Stockport Golf Club.

Red Ball games kick off with a frustrating draw for 1st's and a crushing win for 2nd's however both 3rd teams lose

Read the reports below to get the full story on a frustrating Saturday for the 1st's at home against Felling, a big win for the 2nd's and how the NTCL 3rd's got hammered for a double century by Greenside batter.

NEPL Premier Division - 1st XI v Felling (h) - Losing Draw - Match Report by Phil Haves

Felling were the visitors to NBMS Denton Bank on Saturday in the first of the red ball win/lose/draw series of games which saw Aaron Armstrong make his First Eleven League debut after a series of strong performances in the Seconds.

Belly won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first.

Stamper and Aussie Robinson increased the run rate moving the score on to 191 before Aaron claimed his maiden wicket caught by Dave Christie.

In reply David and Rory looked untroubled taking the opening partnership to 96 before David was controversially given out LBW for 56 (3x4 & 4x6).

We took 10 points from the game and go again next weekend when we entertain Burnopfield.

<a href="https://benwellhill.

NEPL Division 2 - 2nd XI v Felling (a) - Won by 163 runs - Captain's Match Report by Joe Fletcher

A convincing win for the 2s on Saturday against Felling.

Having won the toss and deciding to bat, we did excellently early on in some tricky conditions to build a foundation, an opening partnership of 77 for Ayush and Harsh (both opening for the first time), meant that when the inevitable Benwell Hill collapse did come (132/2 to 196/7), we were able to still post a competitive 224/9 (dec).

By in large our batting success was down to Ayush Chakraborty who battled hard for 53 overs for his 98.

In the second half, we were extremely dominant.

That result leaves us with 5 wins from 6, and a trip to Newcastle City next week, weather providing!

<a href="https://benwellhill.

NTCL Division 5 South - 3rd XI v Greenside (h) - Lost by 268 runs - Vice Captains Match Report by James Walder

The day didn't start well - losing the toss to Greenside 2nd XI and being asked to bowl in the sunny conditions.

The batting target was about bonus points but there was a steady stream of wickets as the team were bowled out for 113.

It was a tough day for young team but they stuck together and will come back stronger over the summer.

<a href="https://benwellhill.

NEPL Sunday Division 1 v Seaham Harbour (a) - Lost by 6 runs - Captain's Report by MattyNEPL Hynd

The NEPL 3s took the field with another young side left by Michael and after losing the toss they were bowling on a warm day.

Gabriel and Nic started well and we had Seaham in trouble at 51 for 4.

Harsh and Michael opened up and we lost Michael early and quickly followed by siddique for 9 leaving us in trouble at 22/2.

Wins for 2nd's and both 3rd teams but 1st's lose again

It was back to winning ways for Joe Fletcher's 2nd team with a hard fought victory against local rivals Newcastle, the NTCL and NEPL 3rd's also recorded excellent wins over Gosforth Strikers and South North respectively, however the 1st's couldn't build on their excellent T20 win at Chester le Street the night before, losing by 6 wickets at Jesmond.

NEPL Premier Division - 1st XI v Newcastle (a) - Lost by 6 wickets - Match Report by Phil Haves

Saturday saw us visit Jesmond on very warm and sunny day, proper cricketing weather.

On winning the toss Belly elected to bat first with Rory and Dave opening up.

A cameo innings of 20 by Oli added a further 50 with Sam as we passed 200.

In reply early wickets eluded us as the Newcastle openers progressed the total to 68 in quick time before the introduction of SMJ made the breakthrough dismissing Doig.

A sobering and disappointing defeat to end this set of orange ball fixtures as we move into win/lose/draw matches on Saturday with a home game against Felling when a confidence boosting win would help our League position.

<a href="https://benwellhill.

NEPL Division 2 - 2nd XI v Newcastle (h) - Won by 3 wickets - Captain's Match Report by Joe Fletcher

Back to winning ways for the 2s on Saturday, in a nail biter against Newcastle.

Having lost the toss and being asked to bowl, we did excellently in restricting Newcastle to 173, some early wickets for Ayush and Abu set up this seasons best bowling performance so far (across all teams) from Aaron Armstrong with 6/20 off his 7.

In response, the wicket proved tough, and another bout of 45-3 left us struggling not only with wickets, but also run rate!

Michael Maclachlan and Joe Fletcher tried to steady things, and take the game as deep as possible, but when they both fell for 41 and 30 in a short space, followed by Andy Dawson dismissed for 2.

However, one of the great strengths of this side is our ability to bat deep, and some great hitting, and running between Aaron and Harsh, got us close, needing 15 off 15 balls when Harsh was dismissed.

Jonesy was sent in to slog to the short boundary, and with a 6 off the last ball of the 49th over, we needed 4 off 6!

That result leaves us with 4 wins from 5, and a trip to Felling next week, for our first red ball fixture of the season!

<a href="https://benwellhill.

NTCL Division 5 South - 3rd XI v Gosforth Strikers (a) - Won by 104 runs - Vice Captains Match Report by James Walder

The 3rd XI travel out to Haydon Bridge School to play Gosforth Strikers.

Having lost of couple of early wickets James managed to pull his hamstring and required a runner - step forward Seb.

It was then over to the younger players (including u12 Thomas fielding for his injured Dad) to apply some pressure on a wicket that had a few demons in it.

A good team performance getting the maximum 30 point haul.

<a href="https://benwellhill.

NEPL Sunday Division 1 v South North (a) - Won by 5 runs - Captain's Report by Matty Hynd

The NEPL 3rd team made it 2 wins from 3 after a close fought victory over a young South Northumberland team.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first we lost both openers early.

Knowing that South Northumberland had a strong batting unit we knew early wickets were needed.

A great all round performance by the team who never gave up and took some fantastic catches.

<a href="https://benwellhill.

Saturday to forget as all 3 teams lose, however Sunday 3s record first league win

It was a Saturday to forget as the 1s and 2s lost to Hetton Lyons, the 1s were well beaten at Hetton, however the 2s lost a thriller by 1 wicket at NBMS Denton, the 3s also lost against Blaydon 2s.

NEPL Premier Division - 1st XI v Hetton Lyons (a) - Lost by 8 wickets - Match Report by Phil Haves

Saturday saw us slip to a disappointing defeat at Hetton Lyons as our batting failed and we were unable to set any form of defendable target.

Only 3 batters reached double figures and the turning point in the innings was without doubt the run out of Dave who harnessed his power game and had made a diligent and composed 32.

Despite Max reducing the hosts to 8/2 the target was achieved without further loss as Fishwick and Jarvis Clay, so often a thorn in our side, saw Hetton home inside 27 overs.

Having failed to collect any points from the game we move on to Jesmond on Saturday when we hope to complete this sequence of Win/Lose games with a much improved performance and result.

<a href="https://benwellhill.

NEPL Division 2 - 2nd XI v Hetton Lyons (h) - Lost by 1 wicket - Captain's Match Report by Joe Fletcher

A first loss of the season for the 2s on Saturday against Hetton Lyons.

Having lost the toss and being asked to bat, we struggled to get any notable partnerships going, with only Aaryan passing 50.

In response, the opening bowlers fired to leave Hetton 30/3, however some sensible middle order batting laid a nice platform for the opposition, and despite a flurry of late wickets, they were able to get over the line by 1 wicket!

That result leaves us with 3 wins from 4, and a home tie vs Newcastle, who also boast the same run of form!

<a href="https://benwellhill.

NTCL Division 5 South - 3rd XI v Blaydon II (a) - Lost by 29 run - Vice Captains Match Report by James Walder

Another young 3rd XI hosted the Blaydon 2nd XI at Newbrough.

However a number of partnerships built around J Burke (104 not out) saw Blaydon post 217 for 9 helped by a couple of dropped catches.

The chase got off to a bad start with Adam out in the first over but James had good partnerships with Gabe and Seb as we reached 117 for 3.

A close game where the dropped catches or a couple of partnerships could have made the difference.

<a href="https://benwellhill.

NEPL Sunday Division 1 v Philadelphia (h) - Won by 63 runs - Captain's Report by Matty Hynd

The NEPL 3rd XI took the field for the 2nd time in game week 4 after back to back postponed matches.

We handed NEPL debuts to Leo Malhotra, Abdul and Haashir Khan.

Harsh and Haashir started us off and Harsh removed the dangerous Dean Caris with an excellent delivery.

A good effort from our young side who fielded and bowled particularly well.

2nd's maintain 100% record and Saturday 3rd's win but 1st team lose at Seaham Harbour

Joe Fletcher's 2nd XI continued their winning start to the season with a convincing 8 wicket win over Whitburn, the NTCL 3rd XI also got back to winning ways with a narrow 3 wicket win over Newcastle Super Kings II's.

NEPL Premier Division - 1st XI v Seaham Harbour (a) - Lost by 41 runs - Match Report by Phil Haves

In the absence of Belly due to family commitments Max took over the reigns and having won the toss asked the hosts to bat.

Our reply got off to a scintillating start as mainly due to the courtesy of Dave the home sides overseas professional, Junaid Khan, saw his first four overs disappear for 47 runs.

A disappointing result saw us come away with 8 points for our efforts and we go again on Saturday when Chester le Street are the visitors to NBMS Denton Bank.

<a href="https://benwellhill.

NEPL Division 2 - 2nd XI v Whitburn (h) - Won by 9 wickets - Captains Match Report by Joe Fletcher

Another very strong performance for the 2s on Saturday against a very strong Whitburn side.

Having lost the toss and being asked to field, we really restricted Whitburn throughout the innings with our spin attack, which accounted for 43 of the 48 overs bowled.

In our pursuit of 149, the top order avoided 40/3 for the first time this season, and in turn, our first 100 partnership of the season led by Ben Mussett and Jayam Patel (60* & 58) ensured we reached our target of 152/1 with over 20 overs to spare.

That result leaves us with 3 wins from 3, with only Chester-le-Street matching us, who we have next week in a huge clash at the top!

<a href="https://benwellhill.

NTCL Division 5 South - 3rd XI v Newcastle Super Kings (h) - Won by 3 wickets - Captains Report by Chris Pounder

Saturday saw 3’s face Newcastle Super Kings in their first game at home after two away fixtures.

After losing the toss we were asked to field first and a tight opening spell form both Seb and Naz restricted the Super Kings openers.

In reply the Hill made a fairly solid start before losing two quick wickets to leave us 25/2 before losing a third at 31.

A good win for 3’s and and a promising early start to the season.

Chairmans News : May 2026

The cricket season is moving rapidly into full swing and Director of Cricket Philip Nicholson will be pleased that all our senior teams have already found a measure of individual and collective success.

Last Saturday the Hill faithful were treated to two stand out performances.

In a very short time David has made a first class impression both on and off the field and looks well placed to enter the Pantheon of Benwell Hill Professional Cricketers.

New Second Team Skipper Joe Fletcher has led from the front with two great wins against strong opposition.

Please follow the excellent match reports that appear on <a href="http://www.

Off the field we are still dealing with the repercussions of Storm Dave over Easter.

Visitors to The Club will see that the Haves Patio project is nearing completion.

In my Joe Moore driven quest for brevity I will conclude there.

One sobering thought to convey is to wish those of our members who are currently undergoing medical treatment the absolute best

As ever my thanks to all the staff and volunteers for your unstinting efforts on behalf of BHCC.

Phenomenal Century from David Christie seals 10 wicket win for 1s , 2s win at Tynemouth but NTCL 3s lose

The 1s had an amazing 10 wicket win yesterday (25th April) against Shotley Bridge, thanks to a phenomenal 41 ball unbeaten century from pro David Christie, and 5 for 29 from Sam Martin-Jenkins.

NEPL Premier Division - 1st XI v Shotley Bridge (h) - Won by 10 wickets - Match Report by Phil Haves

Those present on Saturday afternoon witnessed one of the most remarkable innings seen at NBMS Denton Bank in many a year as we romped to a 10 wicket victory over Shotley Bridge for a first League victory of the season.

The day started with the visitors winning the toss & electing to bat on what looked a pretty good wicket.

The real entertainment for the home supporters started after the break as Dave brutally dismantled the Shotley bowling reaching a fantastic 100 off only 41 balls with 7x6s & 12x4s finishing 102 not out as we chased down the 115 in only 8.

We travel to Seaham Harbour on Saturday to renew old acquaintances from last season when we were both in Division 1.

<a href="https://benwellhill.

NEPL Division 2 - 2nd XI v Tynemouth (a) - Won by 5 wickets - Captains Match Report by Joe Fletcher

A near-perfect day for the 2s on Saturday at Tynemouth.

Having won the toss and electing to field, we were excellent in restricting an aggressive Tynemouth top order, with a disciplined bowling performance all-round (only conceding 8 extras across the innings).

In our pursuit of 153, a traditional Benwell Hill collapse at 30/0 -> 37/3 kept things interesting, and the middle order just about provided the necessary platform to go on and win the game with several useful contributions, led by Joe Fletcher, who finished unbeaten on 68* from 79 balls.

To secure a 5-wicket victory against a quality Tynemouth outfit is a great result, and hopefully we can keep the momentum going into our first home game vs Whitburn next week!

<a href="https://benwellhill.

NTCL Division 5 South - 3rd XI v Annfield Plain (a) - Lost by 5 wickets - Vice Captains Report by James Walder

Another young 3rd XI travelled to a sunny but cold Annfield Plain for their second match of the season.

Returning captain, Cherry, won the toss and chose to bat but there was a steady stream of wickets from the start including a hat trick as both opening bowlers picked up 4 wickets in their 9 over spells.

There was some hope as Seb and Nicholas both picked up 2 wickets in their opening 5 over spells and it was game on at 26-4.

Despite losing there were good contributions from the junior players and we battled well to pick up 3 bonus points.

<a href="https://benwellhill.

NEPL Sunday Division 1 - 3rd XI v Sacriston (a) - Lost by 6 wickets - Captains Report by Matty Hynd

The NEPL 3rd XI got their season up and running on Sunday against a young talented Sacriston team.

Entering the game with a very young team we won the toss and elected to bat with a number of the team still in transit.

We got off to the worst possible start losing one of the 3 senior players Rash Shad, first ball.

Sacriston looked to attack and skipper Dodds punished anything loose, Harsh Patel removed Hubber with a beauty and Nav Safi took a blinder to remove Bulmer as Sacriston were 27/2.

A great learning experience for the young side against a Sacriston side that will do very well this year.

Next week we play Whitburn at the Hill which will be another test for the young team.

Season opening wins for 2s and 3s but 1s lose in battling display against reigning champions (with match reports)

The 2026 NEPL season began for the 1s with the toughest fixture of all against the 2024 and 2025 Premier League winners Burnmoor, with the Hill eventually going down by 5 wickets in a battling display which bodes well for the season ahead.

NEPL Premier Division - 1st XI v Burnmoor (h) - Lost by 5 wickets - Match Report by Phil Haves

On a blustery Saturday morning the First Eleven hosted current League Champions Title favourites Burnmoor.

Belly lost the toss and the visitors asked us to bat first.

This soon became 104/7 when Abu walked past one and was stumped off Bridge.

In reply Max got us an early breakthrough dismissing Greenwell with the score on 12 and when another debutant Mark Watson (Harpo) dismissed Brown we felt we had an outside chance of a surprise victory.

An encouraging start to the season albeit not the result we had wished for however this game against the strongest all round side in the League will not define our season.

Shotley Bridge are the visitors to NBMS Denton Bank on Saturday.

<a href="https://benwellhill.

NEPL Division 2 - 2nd XI v Tynedale (a) - Won by 16 runs - Captains Match Report by Joe Fletcher

In a last over thriller to start the season, the 2XI got off to a winning start in their league campaign against a strong 10-man Tynedale side.

Having lost the toss and asked to bat, the 2s found themselves in a spot of bother after the powerplay at 46/3 following some aggressive play up front.

In reply Tynedale got off to a flyer, and a rain break at 15 overs proved key as at 75/0 they looked to be running away with things.

Ayush Chalraborty with 1/36 (10) & Peter Jones 0/49 (10), ensured the required run rate crept up well over above a run a ball, allowing for the likes of Aaron Armstrong 1/46 (6) & Jayam Patel 2/51 (10) could take wickets regularly enough to see us home.

There were moments where the game could have swung either way, but the lads held their nerve and ultimately secured the win in the last over, in which Tynedale could only manage 6 runs whilst requiring 23.

Onto another big test next week away at Tynemouth!

<a href="https://benwellhill.

NTCL Division 5 West - 3rd XI v Matfen II (a) - Won by 70 runs - Captains Report by James Walder

A young 3rd XI team (one u14, four u15s and two u16s) travelled to Matfen for the start of the season in some wet and windy conditions.

A wet pitch and outfield meant it was hard work with the ball doing plenty in the wind and off the pitch.

James was ably supported by Seb as we started to tick off the batting bonus points with James reaching 61 before being bowled by ex-Hill player Ramin Aatif chasing late runs.

Some early wickets from Khaled (2 for 12) and tight bowling got us off to a good start and the young bowlers coped well with a challenging wind blowing across the pitch.

A great 30 point win to start the season and positive to see all the juniors contributing to a real team effort.

<a href="https://benwellhill.
