Banks Salver success for 1st's, however 3rd's lose in high scoring game

29 Jul 2020

The 1st's got off to a cracking start to the 2020 Banks Salver competition with a convincing win over Blaydon at Denton Bank.

Blaydon won the toss and batted first, and after a steady start of 44-1, wickets started to tumble in the middle overs, and they eventually slumped to 135 all out in their 40 overs, wickets were shared with Max Williamson taking 3 for 21 off his 8 overs, Rory Hanley 3 for 35 off his 8, Mohsin Mukhtar 2 for 27 and Finn McGreath 1 for 27 off their alloted overs, Luke Doneathy with the other wicket.

The Hill made short shrift of the target, chasing it down in 23.2 overs for the loss of 2 wickets. Top scorer was Kyle Coetzer, Luke Doneathy scoring an entertaining 39 off 27 balls, including a huge six out the ground, James Schofield (13) and evergreen Phil NIcholson in his 50th season of 1st XI cricket recording a red inker with 12.

After last weekend's success over Mitford, there was a disappointing and narrow West Tyne loss for 3rd XI at Belsay. Despite scoring what looked like a match winning total of 183 for 7 in 35 overs, including 50's for Davey Ladd and Rohan Aatif, and 31 for John Chambers, Belsay chased the total down for the loss of 8 wickets in the penultimate over. The loss of skipper Jeff Mason part way through the game due to a family emergency, undoubtedly handicapped the bowling efforts. Wickets were shared around the team with stand in skipper Chris Pounder getting 2, Zain Ullah 2, Haroon Malik, Harry Reeves and normally wickie Rohan Aatif taking 1 each.
