Tyneside Golf Club hosted the 50th edition of the Benwell Hill Golf Day last Sunday (4th October). 28 golfers of varying abilities made up of Hill cricket and social members and their guests hit the course on a warm October afternoon. Club President Tom Williamson was the honourary starter once again and received huge applause from all the competitors around the 1st tee when he drove off, and to be fair his effort was by no means the worst off the 1st tee on the day.
Course knowledge was clearly a key factor in the results with Tyneside golf club members Griff (Brayson) and Phil Grice occupying the top two spots in the AU March Singles Trophy, Griff taking the trophy with a magnificent 45 points, shooting a gross 72 off his 11 handicap, Phil Grice was the unlucky runner up with an excellent 42 points, Barry Pearson completing the podium in 3rd place with 38 points. Jane Tumelty was the leading lady with 29 points.
There was some compensation for Phil as he and David 'Stato' Bland won the Pairs competition with a cumulative total of 78 points, 11 better than the runners up Russ Brown and Joe Kilpatrick.
Nearest the Pin awards were won by Gary Lloyd (6th hole), Paul Armstrong (9th hole), Carole Grice (12th hole) and Barry Evans (16th), Mark Dale won the nearest the pin in 2 shots on the Par 4 18th hole.
