Chairman's update - 7 June 2023

9 Jun 2023

The Cricket Season is galloping along and we are already a third of the way through the League Programme. It is all to play for in the three Saturday Leagues and given improved player availability and with a fair wind this could yet be a really successful year across the board.

Last Saturday saw one of the most remarkable First X1 games in our history as Pete Halliday and Kyle Coetzer compiled a record breaking partnership to beat a strong Chester-le-Street side at Ropery Lane. At 38-4 chasing 284 all looked lost but our Captain and Director of Cricket decided otherwise and chased down the score  with  a couple of overs to spare. Never was the glorious uncertainty of cricket better illustrated.

Please read the match reports that appear weekly on the website – they tend to be an entertaining read and tell the truth even when things go awry.

Our Junior sides are also performing well – I watched an excellent Under 11 victory over an impressive Sacriston team last night and the progress made by many of our charges is reflected in the number of appearances in Senior Cricket and in Northumberland Age Group cricket. Our volunteer coaches do a fantastic job – not least at the All Stars Introductory level coordinated by Mark Wright.

To other news Assistant Groundsman John Chambers reached the big 30 last Saturday and celebrated in time honoured fashion whilst the President of the Club Tom Stanfield Williamson has signally failed to keep his significant birthday a secret and I am delighted to announce that June 11 is THE BIG DAY. Many Happy returns from all the members of BHCC TSW.

The Board continue to meet on a regular basis and are in the process of considering `what next`? in terms of investment in the infrastructure of the Club. We are ever open to all ideas for future from the ambitious e.g. allotments on the former tennis courts to the practical e.g. a new Gents sign in the Club House. Please contact me or one of my colleagues – Messrs Dyson,Shaw,Haves,Dawson or Smalley to express your views.

I hope you all continue to enjoy your Membership of BHCC and I wish all our active squash and cricket members every success in their competitive endeavours in the summer months.

Simon Lunn BHCC Omniscient Chairman (as described by Varsi MacMillan our impressive educated Aussie!!)
