Chairman's update - November 2020 : Club shut down till December

3 Nov 2020

It is with a heavy heart that I have to inform Members that in line with Government Policy the Club will be locked down from Wednesday evening until December 2nd.

I would ask that for the next four weeks Members strictly follow the various guidelines when visiting the ground – hopefully some sort of normality will be restored before Christmas.

It is also with sadness that I have to report the sudden death of Keith Robson, Chairman of the North East Premier League. Keith was a good friend of Benwell Hill CC and his contribution to North East Cricket was immense. R.I.P.

With regard to the day to day business of Benwell Hill the Board will continue to oversee matters but the professional staff will be on furlough from November 4th  for the duration of the lockdown. Again one can only hope that this is a temporary state of affairs – our staff have been fantastic throughout the pandemic.

To end on three positive notes:-

Firstly, I am delighted to announce that Pete Halliday will be Club Captain in 2021. Pete and Director of Cricket Kyle Coetzer have forged a formidable partnership and our cricket is in safe hands.

Secondly, Martin Avery informs me that the Squash Section broke all records in October in terms of income and court occupancy. We have 54 signed up squash members which is extremely healthy.

Finally the Board are working on a few projects to try to further develop the facilities on the ground. We hope to do this by accessing grant aid but if anyone knows any eccentric millionaires please point them in my direction.

Stay safe and well everybody.
