Banks Bowl Cup final defeat for 2nd XI at Ashington

24 Aug 2023

Our first cup final of the 2023 season, the NEPL Banks Bowl took place on Sunday 20 August at Langwell Cresent in Ashington, unfortunately however it ended in defeat as Ashington ran out of convincing winners by 75 runs.

Ashington won the toss and elected to bat, and it proved a great decision as they posted an imposing 258 all out in 38 overs. Despite the huge total only 3 batters made double figures, Adam Nichol (81), Callum Storey (71) and Scott Pearcey (62). Safiun Ahsan Diip was the pick of the bowlers with an excellent 4 for 23 from 8 overs, Abu Siddique took 3 wickets for 57 in 7 overs. There was also 2 wickets for Warren Poxon.

In reply we were struggling from the start losing 2 quick wickets, but wickets continued to fall 18 for 3, 56 for 4, 62 for 5, 80 for 6, 110 for 7. Largely thanks to Freddie McGregor who scored 63 and Rory Mustard with 29 not out, we eventually finished with a total of 183 for 9.
