Junior Update - Rain Rain and more Rain dominates early weeks of the season

9 Jun 2024

Read on for an early season update on how Junior teams are performing. Unfortunately rain has dominated the early fixtures of the season, but it's heartening to see so many of our older juniors performing so well at senior levels, long may it continue.

Under 15 Report - Managers : Barry Pearson and Max Williamson

The under 15s started the season with a good win at home to Stocksfield. We scored 142/4 in 20 overs with Rory Mustard scoring 55* with useful contributions from Gabriel Mellor with 27 and 21 from Ben Robinson.

Seb Fletcher Woods tore into the Stocksfield batting taking 3/7, Aaron Armstrong took 2/7 and Tom Hewison 2/10 as the visitors finished on 50/9 in 20 overs.

An excellent home win over local rivals South North has taken us through to a cup semi final on Monday 10th June away to Morpeth. South North were restricted to 97/6 in 20 overs led by Gabriel with 3/15 and Fergus Wallace with 2/15. In reply the Hill fought to a 7 wicket win with an over to spare led by openers Gabriel with 30 and Ben Robinson with 29.

On Monday night, we defeated a young Ponteland side with Rory, Ben, Aaron and Fergus all scoring unbeaten 50s as the Hill amassed 217/0 in their 20 overs.vFrom 2/3, a spirited effort from Ponteland saw them reach 92/5, Seb took 3/7 and Harsh Patel 2/17.

U13 Report - Manager : Jim Robnson

After a rain delayed start to the season the U13s got underway in a cup match away to Ponteland. Batting first Ponteland posted a score of 121/3 off their 20 overs. 2 wickets for Reyansh and 1 for Tommy. Unfortunately, the lads fell just short in the run chase finishing 101/5. Seb Fletcher Woods top scoring with 19 and good contributions of 11 from Harsh Patel, 9 from Nicholas Walder and 7 from Daniel Hynd.

The league then got under way with a good win at home against Cowgate CC. Batting first we finished on 131/6. Freddie Mexter top scoring with 27 and Nicholas Walder with 26. There were good contributions from Seb, 19 and a nice cameo from Sai, 13.

A really good bowling performance ended with Cowgate bowled out for 61 after 14.5 overs. Charlie Krzysiak taking a caught and bowled with the first ball of the innings. 2 wickets for Charlie, 3 each for Tommy Sutcliffe and Vihan Dhillon.

The next league match was due to be against Ponteland but this was cancelled due to more rain. There have then been 2 friendlies the first away at Tynemouth ending in a narrow defeat, falling just short in the run chase. Then an exiting draw at home against Tynemouth. We batted first scoring 98/3 with Ashington levelling the scores with a 4 off the last ball of the match.

Hopefully the rain stops and the lads can get plenty more cricket in as the season continues.

U11 Report - Manager : James Walder

The u11 team have managed to fit in four games around the rain with several playing making their debut - Austin, Ted and Flynn.

Our first match of the year was against Ashington with a good batting display put a net score of 116 losing only 2 wicket. Top scores were Oliver with 38 (including a 6) and Aryan and Thomas both scoring 13. Some nice straight bowling helped us take 8 wickets including a great diving catch from Joseph to restrict Ashington to a net score of minus 12.

It was a similar pattern when we play away at Newcastle City with Flynn top scoring with 12 in a net score of 91. Thomas W and Flynn then both claimed three wickets as Newcastle City only scored minus 15. In his first match keeping wicket Joseph got a catch and a stumping.

For the second year in a row we were drawn against Shotley Bridge in the cup - this is not in pairs and when you were out you were out. We didn't bowl or field very well with 2 Shotley batsmen both reaching 50 when they had to retire. Ted picked up 3 wickets but dropped catches and wides/no balls let Shotley score 135 off 16 overs. The players responded really well against some good bowling. Oliver hit 51 off only 27 balls with Aryan (22) and Thomas W (15) taking us to 126 and a 9 run defeat.

We had a another good win against Ponteland where we posted a net score of 109 losing only 2 wickets. We then proceeded to take 16 wickets including 4 run outs. In 1 over Oliver took four wickets including a hat trick and we also managed to pick up a run out in the same over! Flynn picked up 3 wickets with Thomas W and Emily getting 2 each. Ponteland ended up on minus 32.

It has been a good start to the season so hoping to get some more sunshine and dry weather in June and July.
