On Sunday 26th June, Benwell Hill’s Under 9’s had their first festival of the year at a very windy Backworth Cricket Club.
Playing three games in total, the first game saw us facing Alnmouth. Winning the toss, the team chose to bowl first, and bowl they did!
The strong bowling and fielding from Benwell Hill limited Alnmouth to a net score of 211. Emily and Verity both took good catches, Matthew got two wickets in two balls, and there were also two runouts. In reply, we reached 247, with Rahim and Thomas W both hitting some boundaries.
Our next match was against a strong Morpeth team, and we failed to take a wicket as they posted 279, which was helped by some generous fielding. However, undeterred, our team returned strong, and we were in a good position thanks to some good batting from Amelia and Aryan – not quite get across the line, but extremely close, ending on 254 (losing 5 wickets).
Our final game was against the Morpeth B team, and after winning the toss for the third game in a row, we limited them to a score of 226, with Thomas F, Aryan, and Amelia all picking up wickets. Our reply was full of boundaries as we managed to hit 15, including five 6s, with Thomas W and Emily scoring 33 runs in their two overs as we reached 278.
Overall it was a great start to the u9 season with the players recognising the areas they need to work on and all using the skills they’ve learnt and continue to learn at practice.
Our under 9’s team continues to go from strength to strength, and is extremely strong, focussed, and committed. We can’t wait to see how our TWO, yes two, under 9’s teams come on at Stocksfield’s festival on Sunday 3rd July.
Keep an eye on our Benwell Hill Twitter and Facebook pages for all the action!
