Saturday to forget as all 3 teams lose, however Sunday 3s record first league win

20 May 2026

It was a Saturday to forget as the 1s and 2s lost to Hetton Lyons, the 1s were well beaten at Hetton, however the 2s lost a thriller by 1 wicket at NBMS Denton, the 3s also lost against Blaydon 2s. There was better news on Sunday however as the NEPL 3s won their first league game of the season - after 1 loss and 2 cancellations. Read on for the match report.

NEPL Premier Division - 1st XI v Hetton Lyons (a) - Lost by 8 wickets - Match Report by Phil Haves

Saturday saw us slip to a disappointing defeat at Hetton Lyons as our batting failed and we were unable  to set any form of defendable target.

Only 3 batters reached double figures and the turning point in the innings was without doubt the run out of Dave who harnessed his power game and had made a diligent and composed 32. We then lost 7 wickets for 37 runs slipping from 61/3 to 98 all out with 18 overs remaining.

Despite Max reducing the hosts to 8/2 the target was achieved without further loss as Fishwick and Jarvis Clay, so often a thorn in our side, saw Hetton home inside 27 overs.

Having failed to collect any points from the game we move on to Jesmond on Saturday when we hope to complete this sequence of Win/Lose games with a much improved performance and result.

NEPL Division 2 - 2nd XI v Hetton Lyons (h) - Lost by 1 wicket - Captain's Match Report by Joe Fletcher

A first loss of the season for the 2s on Saturday against Hetton Lyons.

Having lost the toss and being asked to bat, we struggled to get any notable partnerships going, with only Aaryan passing 50. Some poor dismissals meant we were bowled out for a below par 157.

In response, the opening bowlers fired to leave Hetton 30/3, however some sensible middle order batting laid a nice platform for the opposition, and despite a flurry of late wickets, they were able to get over the line by 1 wicket!

That result leaves us with 3 wins from 4, and a home tie vs Newcastle, who also boast the same run of form!

NTCL Division 5 South - 3rd XI v Blaydon II (a) - Lost by 29 run - Vice Captains Match Report by James Walder

Another young 3rd XI hosted the Blaydon 2nd XI at Newbrough. Having lost the toss, Nicholas took a wicket in the first over and wickets from Naz and Seb saw Blaydon reduced to 46-4.

However a number of partnerships built around J Burke (104 not out) saw Blaydon post 217 for 9 helped by a couple of dropped catches. Nicholas, Seb, Naz and Cherry all picking up 2 wickets plus Adam getting one as well.

The chase got off to a bad start with Adam out in the first over but James had good partnerships with Gabe and Seb as we reached 117 for 3. Unfortunately James missed a straight one for a run a ball 63 and with Naz falling for 23 in the same way it left the Hill up against it. Hass, Hector and Cherry all reached double figures but we came up 29 short and were bowled out for 188 with four overs to go.

A close game where the dropped catches or a couple of partnerships could have made the difference.

NEPL Sunday Division 1 v Philadelphia (h) - Won by 63 runs - Captain's Report by Matty Hynd

The NEPL 3rd XI took the field for the 2nd time in game week 4 after back to back postponed matches.

We handed NEPL debuts to Leo Malhotra,  Abdul and Haashir Khan.  After winning the toss we elected to bat first on a surface that looked like it might be helpful for our 7 spinners ! Ayush and Harsh started well and put on 117 for the first wicket before Harsh was superbly caught by the Philadelphia wicket keeper for 44.  Ayush followed soon after for a well made 68, Sukhveer followed quickly after and Rash got a quick 20 using mainly one handed shots.  Aaron pushed us over maximum points with a quick 36 from 27 and Phil Nicholson finished unbeaten on 3.  This left us 185/6 in our 40 overs.

Harsh and Haashir started us off and Harsh removed the dangerous Dean Caris with an excellent delivery. Haashir struggled to control the swing and hurt his back so could only manage 3 overs.  Oliver came on and restricted Philadelphia picking up 1/29 in his 8 overs.  Ayush replaced Harsh and was hard to get away bowling 8 overs, 1/11 and removed dangerous man Barton for 37. Deputant Leo Malhotra replaced Oliver and was hard to get away, Harsh and Sukvheer both taking excellent catches off him and he finished with 4-26 on his senior debut.  Phil Nicholson replaced Ayush and bowled with guile picking up 1/17 from 6 which he feels could have been more.Philadelphia ended 122/8, which gave the Hill their first sunday win of the season.

A good effort from our young side who fielded and bowled particularly well.  Next week we travel to south Northumberland who id expect to be a very tough challenge.
