Weekend Review - 17-19 May : Great wins for 2s and 3s but 1s suffer two heavy defeats at Burnmoor

21 May 2024

After a stunning weekend last week the 1st XI had a weekend to forget with a 68 run T20 defeat on Friday and a 7 wicket league defeat on Saturday against a strong Burnmoor team, however there was better news elsewhere with the 2nd XI and 3rd XI recording excellent victories on Saturday over Hetton Lyons and Wylam respectively.

NEPL Premier League - 1st XI v Burnmoor (a) - lost by 7 wickets.

Roving reporter Phil Haves is taking a break this week, so the report will be brief this week, and given the heavy defeat probably just as well.

Skipper Pete won the toss and decided to bat on the same challenging wicket we played on the previous evening, however things started badly and didn't improve as well fell to 89 all out inside 30 overs. Only Phil Bell (18), Dan Gardiner (18 not out) and Luke Mussett (12) making double figures. Burnmoor pro's Waqas Maqsood and Ryan Pringle keeping up their excellent records against the Hill with 4 wickets and 3 wickets each,

Despite some early wickets which reduced the hosts to 22 for 3,the Burnmoor middle order rallied with ex Durham CCC players Ross Greenwell (39 not out) and Stu Poynter (29 not out) knocked off our score inside 22 overs.

Hetton's reply started steadily enough, but they were never up with the rate, and the scoreboard pressure saw them lose wickets regularly, as they finished 109 all out inside 30 overs. Skipper Pete Jones retuning the amazing figures of 5 for 5 off 4 overs. and youngster Ayush Chakraborty taking an excellent 3 for 5 off 3 overs.
