Weekend Review - 25-26 May : 2nd's continue unbeaten start to the season but 1st's lose again

28 May 2024

Saturday saw a win and loss for the 2nd's and 1st's respectively, however the West Tyne 3rd XI were not in action this week The wet weather once again impacted the weekend fixtures with both of Sunday's senior fixtures, the 1st's ECB National Club Championship game at Wakefield and the 3rd's NEPL game against Gateshead Fell being cancelled due to waterlogged pitches.

NEPL Premier Leagie - 1st v Tynemouth (h) - lost by 95 runs

Skipper Pete won the toss, and with the weather set fair for the day but a damp outfield, he decided to invite Tynemouth to bat first. Their innings was in the balance throughout the 45 overs with the Hill taking wickets regularly, however a key caught behind decision against Matthew Kimmitt didn't go our way early on, which gave Tynemouth the early impetus to an impressive total of 240 all out in their alloted 45 overs. Matthew Brown's hard hitting late on in the innings with the tail, ensured the total was 40 to 50 more than looked likely when the visitors were 177 for 7 with 6 overs to go. There was 2 wickets each for Luke, Max and Yash, and 1 each for Callum, Rory and Dan.

Our reply saw a reasonable start at 25 for 0, however the toon's Sean Longstaff (who seems to reserve his handful of cricket matches for the Hill) took the 2 key wickets of Haydon, caught behind for 16 (footage  is viewable all over social media as word spread that Sean was in cricketting action despite his rumoured ankle injury!), he then got the wicket of Yash, who was adjudged LBW for 7. Wickets then fell reguarly as we tumbled to 145 all out inside 40 overs. Rory top scoring with 20, next bet was Luke with 19.

Another disappointing batting display. I am sure the lads had some hard words in the dressing room at the end of the game, and will look to put things right next week, which looks like a bottom of the table 6 pointer against Tynedale, who to be fair have responded superbly to some heavy early defeats with 2 ecellent recent league wins.

NEPL Divison 2 - 2nd XI v Tynemouth (a) - won by 8 wickets

On a soft and challenging pitch, the Hill bowlers took advantage of the conditions handed to them when Tynemouth won the toss and chose to bat.

After 13 overs Tynemouth were 30-5 and struggling. Abu and Jake got plenty of movement backed up by the ever reliable Safi. Some good, composed batting and some bad, chaotic catching saw Tynemouth recover to 159-8 at the end of thier 45 overs.

In reply we rarely looked troubled. Rohaan made things look pretty easy as he ticked off the runs without fuss whilst ably supported by Jake and Abu. A good day out where we were on top for almost the entire game.
