Weekend Review - 29-30 June : Huge 1st innings scores not enough for victories for 1s or 2s

5 Jul 2024

Another frustrating weekend for the Hill with the 1s going down to a 7 wcket defeat despite posting their top team score of the season (271 for 4), and the 2s thanks to Joe Fletcher's superb 133 were are also frustrated as Gateshead Fell held out for a draw and a share of the points. The NEPL 3s however kept up their good run with victory over Hetton Lyons.

NEPL Premier League - 1st XI v Burnopfield (h) - lost by 7 wickets - Match Report from Phil Haves

Saturday saw us return to NBMS Denton Bank to host Burnopfield hoping to end our run of disappointing recent results. A side missing the skipper, Belly & Rory were dealt a further late blow when Callum was forced to pull out due to illness.

Burnopfield won the toss & asked us to have a bat on what looked like a good wicket for batting. Arun & Adam opened up & took us to 39 before Arun was bowled for 15. Yash joined Adam & not for the first time this season they steadily built a substantial partnership with first Yash & then Adam reaching half centuries as the partnership passed the 100 before Adam pulled up with a calf injury on 50 & was forced to retire. Janders joined Yash who had moved effortlessly to 87 before he was out with the total on 186. On the back of his unbeaten half century last week Max was next in & continued in much the same vane as the previous Saturday hitting a quick fire 30 off 20 balls with 4x4s & 1x6 as we passed the 200 to achieve maximum batting points before he was dismissed with the total on 224. Janders continued to score at a brisk rate & duly reached his first half century of the season before he was out on the last ball of the innings as we closed on 271/4.

The visitors reply was 3 overs old when a controversial not out decision in favour of the visitors Ben McKinney proved costly as along with opening partner Matty Oswell they added 110 for the first wicket before McKinney was dismissed for 57. With Oswell & Whitfield both also making half centuries along with quick fire 30’s from John Oswell & Hazell-Evans the visitors made light work of the challenging target claiming victory by 7 wickets with plenty of overs to spare. Yash with 2 & Luke were our only wicket takers.

This was another chastening defeat & as we head to the halfway point in the season a way to put together some positive results needs to be found quickly.
