At the age of just 16-years-old, rising Durham star Luke Doneathy will become the youngest ever captain of Benwell Hill Cricket Club when he leads the team out at Chester-le-Street on Saturday (13 July).
In his first season in the North East Premier League Doneathy has created a tremendous impression with both bat and ball and his mature approach to the game has impressed Benwell Hill Director of Cricket Kyle Coetzer who is unavailable to lead the side at Ropery Lane.
Chairman Simon Lunn said “In a rain affected, sometimes difficult season, Luke’s all-round talent and commitment to our cause has shone through and he shows great leadership skills in one so young. I am sure Luke will make a great fist of cricket captaincy both now and in the future.”
Director of Cricket Kyle Coetzer said “Luke has fitted seamlessly into our environment which has a great mix of young and old since joining the club. He has impressed in all facets of the game and shown excellent leadership and tactical skills. At Benwell Hill we have tried to create a healthy environment for young aspiring players to gain experience and opportunity to flourish into better players, but importantly, more rounded individuals. At just 16 giving Luke the opportunity to lead his new club with some experienced support around him is just another example of how we intend to continue to develop and let youth lead from the front at Benwell Hill.”
