Sunday 29th September saw Ponteland Golf Club host the 48th Benwell Hill Golf day. The annual event which started in 1976, plays for the AU March Trophy for the singles competition (the trophy named after the former Club Chairman and President Alan March), and by a quirk of fate it was actually won in its inaugural year by none other than the current Club President Tom Williamson. And to keep the Hill family theme going this years event was won by Scott Williamson, who successfully defended the Trophy he won last year. Scott won with a score of 40 points, Malcolm Brown finishing second with 39 points and Gary Lloyd third with 38 points.
It was great to see current players, ex players, members and their guests supporting the event with 26 golfers (I use the term loosely) in attendance. The day started with aforementioned Tom Williamson as honouray starter (see pic below). As well as the singles competition, there was a Pairs Competition for the best combined score, this was won with 74 points by Malcolm Brown (39 points) and Steve Cornforth (35 points), runners up with 68 points were Pete Halliday (36 points) and Barry Evans (32 points). Jane Tumelty won the prize for the best ladies score (27 points). Nearest the Pins were won by Max Williamson (2nd hole), Gary Lloyd (7th) and Phil Grice (15th), Joe Kilpatrick in one of his first ever rounds of golf, won the Longest Drive competition on the 18th hole. Thanks to all who participated on the day.
