The recent meeting of the General Committee re-elected yours truly as Chairman of the Club and Hugh Dyson as Vice Chairman. The fact that nobody else wished to stand we have opted to take as a strong vote of confidence in our inspirational leadership qualities.
The cricket season is approaching fast but the unceasing monsoons make it extremely difficult to envisage any League cricket taking place on the due date of April 20th. Groundsman Mark Charlton had the right idea when he headed to Lanzarote last week – he has not missed a day when he could have profitably worked on the field. Prior to going Mark led a `Get Ready for Cricket Day` on March 23rd and my thanks go to the hardy bunch of volunteers who turned up to perform minor miracles on a horrible day.
Our Overseas Professional Yash Kothari will be arriving in the near future and is likely to find our climate a tad different to Rajistan. Please give him a BHCC warm welcome. Yash will be lodging near the Club and is new to the UK so may take a little time to find his feet. Indoor practice has been well attended and all our teams should be competitive in their respective leagues. Some of our young players have great potential and it was great to see that one of our number Hayden Mustard has recently signed a two year rookie Contract with Durham CCC. Hayden also made his First Class Debut in Zimbabwe during the winter – hopefully the start of great things.
Visitors to the Club will see that builders are currently working on improving the Home Changing Rooms and the Players Toilets and Showers. This follows on from the Roof Repairs that were mercifully completed through the winter and I thank Philip Haves for leading on this. We are also in negotiations with the City Council over the instalment of Permanent Traffic Lights at the entrance to the Ground which should also see the Car Park upgraded and the end of the San Andreas fault on the road. I will try to keep you in the loop as we move forward.
The Quiz Season comes to an end on Tuesday April 9th when the Treasurer Larry Dawson is in the Chair. We have had as many as 8 or 9 teams on occasion which makes the tireless efforts of the Volunteer Quizmasters worthwhile. My thanks to all concerned – somehow it makes the bleak midwinter go a little quicker.
The competitive Squash Season also drew to a close – the First Team retained their League 1 status and the Second team gained promotion to Division 4 in their maiden campaign. Congratulations to the team captained by Peter Brown who has joined the Squash Committee replacing Tom McVinnie after `decades of support` as Martin Avery described it.
Finally some of our senior members have really been through the wars lately and the NHS has been to the fore – I`d best not name names but I know the wider Membership would want to wish them all well. May the sun shine on BHCC soon so that the Muppets can resume their lapping of the Ground and the Doom Bar can be properly sampled.
