Chairmans News : November 2023

22 Nov 2023

As we start the run up to Christmas some news highlights to bring Members up to date with what has been going on behind the scenes and some plans for the future.

Apologies first of all for the Gents Toilets in the bar being closed – work is underway to repair the roof in there and to upgrade the facilities. This is long overdue. At the same time we have decided to replace the garage roof which has also been leaking for some time and to carry out repairs to the area above the office. We have always known that this work would have to be done at some point and it makes sense to safeguard the building for the foreseeable future. My thanks to our sponsors NBMS and to Phil Haves for facilitating this work..

The Traffic Lights at the end of the drive remain the subject of negotiations with Newcastle City Council over a lease. When this is resolved we will carry out some remarking of the Car Park. Thank you for your patience.

The Bar and Wake Business continue to go great guns and congratulations are due to Pat and Margaret over their recent significant birthdays. Please offer David any support you can in his attempt to grow a moustache for charity – progress is painfully slow.

The Squash season is underway and Court usage is buoyant – hopefully the two teams in the Northumberland League will enjoy further success in the coming months.

On the Cricket front the Junior Presentation last Monday was a big success and it was great to see Christine Hamilton in the Club. Remembering BHCC legends like  Alan Evans, Tom Hounsome, Norman Green and Neil Hamilton is a really important part of our heritage – they would have been thrilled at the turnout and to hear that Haydon Mustard has made his England U 19 Debut in India today.

Keith Shaw has worked the oracle and we now have a Sponsors License from the Home Office to enable us to push on with bringing Yash Kothari from India as our Professional in 2024. One task we have to accomplish is to find accommodation for Yash next summer. If you can help in any way please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Please continue to support the Club as best you can – the Quiz Nights on Tuesdays have been fun thus far with a good spread of winning teams. The Christmas Programme of events is in formulation and will shortly be published on the Website and on the Notice Boards. Auditions for Santa are also planned with the usual fee being on offer.

Finally, one or two prominent officials of the Club have been in the capable hands of the NHS lately and I am sure all BHCC Members will wish them well.

In closing I will make my regular plea to Members to contact me or one of my Board Colleagues – Messrs Keith Shaw, Larry Dawson, Phil Haves, Hugh Dyson and Bill Smalley- if you have any issues you wish to raise or observations to make.
