Chairman's update - 19 September 2021

22 Sep 2021

On Sunday the curtain came down on a memorable season at Benwell Hill CC. The ground looked tremendous (top marks GWC) and a good crowd watched a complete performance by our Second X1 as they won the James Bell Trophy. Ten players in the side have played Junior Cricket at BHCC and the eleventh Peter Jones is one of the great club men in North East Cricket. How good is that?

I will leave the details of the Season to the various Captains and to the Director of Cricket but suffice it to say we could hardly be in better shape as we already start to look towards 2022. My sincere thanks goes to the myriad people who make our Cricket Club a special organisation.

Our main Sponsors Dacon Fabrications have now completed their commitment to the Club after many years of fantastic support. David Beynon could not have been more loyal to our cause and the Beynon family have been huge supporters of Grassroots Sport in the area. We look forward to the Annual Dinner later in the year when we will be able to thank David in person.

With regard to the Annual Dinner I am proposing to hold it later in the year to ensure the Director of Cricket Kyle Coetzer can attend. He has the small matter of the World T20 Cup to attend first and we wish him every success in that endeavour. It is also great that Kyle has offered to attend the dinner in his kilt and perform the Highland Reel accompanied by Messrs McCreath, Hanley, Guy and Heather.

In other news we have resumed refurbishing the old Pavilion at the foot of the ground with a view to making additional use of it. Watch this space.

The indefatigable Philip Haves continues to move mountains in attracting Sponsorship and Westway Vets are the latest to sign up. They will be utilising some spaces in the Car Park over the next two years from Monday to Friday to accommodate their staff.

October 1 marks the start of the new Membership year and renewal letters will be going out imminently. For the first time for some time the fee has been increased but to soften the blow Differential Pricing will be introduced providing members with a Discount at the bar. The support of all BHCC Members is massively appreciated as we negotiate the choppy waters post Brexit and Covid.

Finally two events to bring to your attention- the Annual `Donate a Prize to the Williamson Family` BHCC Golf day is being held at Ponteland GC on Sunday the 10th of October. Contact Scott to sign up or there is a list in the Club House Foyer.

Last but not least BHCC Quiz Nights will resume on Tuesday October 5th at 8.00pm prompt (regulars note the slightly earlier time to accommodate the bus getters and the oldies). These are fun nights with hopefully some questions to suit all tastes. Please spread the word – teams are normally no more than 4 although we make an exception for Ummagumma who really like to win.

I will endeavour to continue to communicate as we hurtle towards Christmas but in the meantime I make my usual plaintive cry and ask members to contact me if they have anything they wish to say or offers of support to make.
