Chairman's update - 3 May 2022

5 May 2022

The Benwell Hill family was hit with further sad news with the death of Bill Watts a Member since before time began and a huge supporter of the Club. Bill had made a huge contribution to the Club in a host of different ways and he will be sadly missed. Bill was never reluctant to offer either the Chairman or his brother-in- law our esteemed President the benefit of his advice and I will miss his regular opening gambit ``Mr Chairman – can you explain to me etc etc ?`` I rarely could. RIP Bill. His Funeral is at the West Road Crematorium on Thursday 19th May @ 10:30, then back at the Hill.

The season is up and running and we have won a few and lost a few which is the nature of the beast. There have already been some unexpected results in the North East Premier League which suggests 2022 could be an interesting year.

My age old mantra of `all Clubs including ours need more adult players` has resurfaced following some early season unavailability so if you can do any recruiting at any level please do. We are better off than virtually all Clubs in the North East but I worry at the dearth of active players aged 16-18 years.

Our field looks wonderful and the new regime has operated successfully so far. We remain interested in recruiting new blood to help with the communal effort to stage games so please do not hesitate to come forward if you can help in any capacity.

The Club House has a spanking new sound system and our professional staff continue to provide sterling service. Many congratulations to Glad on her recent significant birthday. We will be fitting a new carpet at the end of the Summer following the refurbishment of the bar area and there are a number of functions in the offing so watch the Website for further information. The atmosphere in the Club last Saturday was special and this was reflected in a very healthy bar take. Long may it continue.

There was a first for BHCC on Saturday when the NEPL game v Sunderland was shown live on You Tube. Sponsored by Phill Bell of ART Health Solutions and Produced and Directed by the Coen Brothers (aka Coetzer and Halliday) this is the way of the future and the Hunter highlight package has already gone viral (whatever that means).

I will make my usual plaintive plea for feedback – email simon.lunn@live.co.uk mobile 07791-683827 but in the meantime have a great spring and roll on some hot weather.
