Chairman's Update: May 2019

21 May 2019

Now that the season is properly underway some news and information for BHCC members and friends:-

On the field the start has been mixed – the First Team have struggled to make enough runs and the standard of the NEPL is such that wins are hard earned. The endeavour has been excellent and inconsistency is only to be expected from the youngest team in the League. One thing for sure is that it will be an interesting season.

The Second Team have won all four of their League Games including that against old foes Chester le Street. David Haxon slew a dragon that day and it has been great to see the likes of Zain Ahmed making a real contribution with the bat. It is great when some of the unsung young players make real headway and start to push through the ranks.

Ross Marley and the West Tyne boys are also making progress and there have already been some excellent performances on the field. Even better the Selection Committee have had to make some real decisions at the start of the season and long may that continue.

The two other third teams have also made victorious starts and will look to push on in the ensuing weeks and months.

It was disappointing that the League Cup runs should end so abruptly for the Firsts and Seconds. Both teams committed the Cardinal sin of not batting out the overs and in both games scrambling an extra twenty runs would probably have been enough.

Of course in my day such mistakes were never made ...blah..muppetty..blah de blah.

Barry Pearson and the Junior Committee are also 4 weeks into the coaching season – fixtures are being fulfilled and we are winning some and losing some. The better part of 100 Juniors have signed up which is our annual target – including one or two from Reception Class who have slipped the net. Later in the season we will be staging All Stars Cricket for smaller children on Sunday mornings. Watch this space.

Finally on the cricket front the girls and women are also underway – the standard is getting better every year and their after match teas are a joy to behold.

Other sport in the Club is thriving. The Squash Section has record numbers and the tireless Martin Avery is encouraging Racketball for those of us who are starting to creak a little. Please contact him if you would like to give this game a try.

Over the summer months we are aiming to develop the Tennis side of the Club in conjunction with some of our new Members from the former BHTC. To begin with the courts at the bottom of the ground are now available for any members who would like to play. The only thing we would ask is that you give the courts a brush after you have used them. Further news on this will follow.

Off the field the work continues apace – Committee are starting the process of looking at what is next in terms of investment and if you have any thoughts on this matter please contact me as below. We do not have a monopoly on good ideas and the views of all Members are welcome!

My thanks go to all those who have purchased Sponsorship Boards that look really smart on the West Road wall. Please support these benefactors if you can. Extra special thanks goes to our main sponsor David Beynon of Dacon Fabrications who has provided additional financial support to help us buy a new Cage for Net Practise.

So to conclude these are busy times – please continue to support Benwell Hill CC in whatever way you can – woops nearly forgot Matchball Sponsorship (a snip at £25 please contact Philip Nicholson) – the 20 20 games are great fun on Friday evenings and other Social Events are in the pipeline......cue www.benwellhill.co.uk   and the ubiquitous Twitter Feed.

Till June!!
