Chairman's update - September 6 2020

7 Sep 2020

Once again I wish to reiterate my thanks to all the staff and members of Benwell Hill for their continued co-operation with the Covid 19 guidelines. There was a golden moment a week ago when a significant number of Board Members including yours truly had to be politely reminded of the requirements for Social Distancing whilst huddling together in the Club House window watching the First X1 playing South Northumberland. It is just so easy to forget.....especially in the euphoria of a famous victory.

On the field via slightly different routes the First and Second Teams have made it to the last four of their respective Cup competitions - congratulations to both squads and good luck in the semi finals next Saturday. Chester le Street are the difficult opponents we face in both games with the Seconds at home and the Firsts at Ropery Lane. 12.00 noon starts.

Our three third teams have won more games than they have lost and significant progress has been made by many of our younger players which is always a key objective for this aspect of Hill cricket. The same may also be said of the Ladies team as ever brilliantly led by Sally Anderson.

Our various Junior teams have also tasted considerable success on the field and as is traditional I must record my thanks to Barry Pearson for his tireless work in coordinating games and leading coaching sessions. Particularly pleasing this year has been the active leadership roles played by youthful First Teamers Max Williamson (U13) and Rory Hanley (U15) – they have both gone the extra mile and we hope to repeat this Director of Cricket Coetzer initiative in 2021.

Whisper it quietly but I think we have some of the best Juniors in Northumberland and certainly the best crop in my Hill time which extends to 1983 (aagh).

Off the field the Board continue to meet on more or less a weekly basis and we held the first Committee Meeting a fortnight ago to bring everyone up to date with Club issues. Financially we are `steady away` but we obviously face an uncertain winter. Any support you can offer will always be well received as will any positive suggestions you may be able to offer....

Finally on Sunday September 20 we will bring the curtain down on cricket for 2020 with a Presidents Game starting at 12.00noon. Please come along to what is always an enjoyable occasion – our first of course with new President Tom Williamson!
