Hill win the Tyneside Charity Bowl for the 12th time thanks to another Coetzer century

1 Aug 2021

In a cracking high scoring game against Morpeth the Hill prevailed by 6 runs to win the Tyneside Charity Bowl for the 12th time in our history (we were also winners in 1926, 1928, 1929, 1968, 2002, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014).

The Hill batted first and posted a score of 157 for 4, which was largely due to a superb 113 not out from Kyle Coetzer. The innings had started badly with ex Hill man David Rutherford removing Angus Guy first ball, and Phil Mustard falling in the next over, as we stumbled to 2 for 2. In stepped Kyle who after a watchful start accelerated supremely in the later overs, his 113 came off only 68 balls, with 14 fours and 5 sixes. Next best was Pete Halliday with 24.

The Morpeth innings started in better fashion and at 75 for 2 after 10 and 102 for 2 after 14 overs, they looked well placed to claim a shock win with the 'Craigs' putting on a partnership of 60+, however they were both out in consecutive overs (15th and 16th) and scoreboard pressure on the new batters saw Morpeth begin to lose wickets regularly, Golly however steadied the ship (with 23 off 12 balls) and looked to have got Morpeth back on track until he fell in the 19th over to Joe Kilpatrick (1 of his 3 wickets). Morpeth eventually finished 6 short at the end of the 20 overs, in what was a cracking game for a large Sunday afternoon crowd. Well played both teams.
