We are sad to announce the passing of Rita Evans on Friday evening. Rita was a member of both Benwell Hill Cricket and Tennis Club for over 50 years. Widow of club legend Alan Evans, and mother of stalwart Barry, and grandmother of Mark Wright, our sympathies are with all the family at this sad time.
The photo above shows Rita in her prime as a member of the Northumberland Ladies Tennis team, one of four member of the team from Benwell Hill Tennis Club . Picture and info above are supplied from the Benwell Hill Cricket Club 1883-1983 Centenary Book, which was compiled by Alan Evans. Copies of the book are still available from local libraries (I am sure there also copies available in the Hill Office). The book offers a fascinataing read into the first one hundred years of Benwell Hill.
