Weekend Review - 6-7 July : Beaten by the Weather this week

9 Jul 2024

Heavy rain won the day in all 4 senior fixtures over the weekend. All 4 games got underway but were abandoned part way through. Read on for the  match reports.

NEPL Premier League - 1st XI v South North (h) - abandoned - Match Report from Phil Haves

Saturday saw local rivals & reigning Champions South North visit NBMS Denton Bank in a game that ultimately fell foul to the weather The visitors won the toss & surprisingly given the weather forecast decided to have a bat. An early breakthrough saw Peyton bowled by Callum with the score on 18. Following Luke’s 3rd over which was taken for 15 by Sol Bell we managed to take a grip of the game with wickets falling on a regular basis with the aid of some excellent catches by Haydon, Prowler & Yash. Tindale made a composed 44 as the visitors, following 3 breaks for rain, reached 162/7 in the 38th before the weather intervened for one last time & the game was abandoned. We took 8 points whilst South North took 7.

This was a high standard performance in the field as Callum led the way with 4/44 from 12 probing overs ably assisted by Luke, Dan & 8 controlled overs from Prowler who all bagged a wicket a piece. As previously mentioned the catching was also exemplary.

Hopefully this level of performance can be carried forward for the rest of the season which would give us every chance of picking up some much needed wins to move up the table.

NEPL Premier League - 2nd XI v South North (a) - abandoned - Captains Report from Pete Jones

Upon winning the toss, with rain interruptions predicted, the skipper elected to have a bowl. Unfortunately both opening bowlers had a day to forget and the opposition openers tucked into a buffet of bad balls. With the score already on 57, Robson was unable to complete the 4th over due to a sore pinkie. He was replaced by Poxon who removed both openers and, along with Safi helped restore some sort of normality. A combination of a good pitch, quick outfield, wet ball, injured fielders and a short boundary made it tricky for the fielding side. Either side of a couple of short rain breaks South North progressed steadily until declaring in the 46th over on 282-4. As the players walked off the rain came down and was sufficient to prevent any play in the second innings. The standout performance was from Poxon who bowled his best spell of the season so far and took 3 of the 4 wickets to fall.

West Tyne League - 3rd XI v Wylam (a) - Abandoned

Wylam won the toss and under grey skies inserted us into the bat. After a promising opening stand between Rash Shad (26) and Zain Ahmed (27) we began to lose wickets regularly and slipped to 84 for 5 off 22 overs when the heavens opened. No more play was possible.

NEPL Sunday League - 3rd XI v Gateshead Fell (a) - Abandoned

With the Under 15s playing in Scotland and under strength and under numbered team (only 8 players) headed to the Fell. However, in our favour and keeping up the theme from the previous day, the game was abandoned around the half way stage. We had posted a modest 137 for 6 off our 40 overs. Youngster Ayush Chakraborty top scoring with 36, and Rash Shad next best with 35.
